Protecting Children 7 - 12
Years Old Online
7 - 12-year-olds can be quite tech savvy; even at this young age, they can teach an adult a thing or two! Children between these ages are keen to learn and are continually gaining confidence in navigating the digital landscape. Nurturing this confidence is important, but it is equally important to ensure controls are in place.  Below are a number of points that parents and children should consider.

We have also included some great links for children who want to learn more about all things computing.
-
Understand that being online does not mean that you are protected or anonymous; don't do anything you wouldn't do face-to-face.
-
Be kind and remember what you do online can be tracked.
-
Keep your devices hidden when you are outside.
-
If you see something you are not comfortable with then turn the device off and tell someone.
-
Use safe search engines such as Swiggle or Safe Search Kids or enable SafeSearch settings on Google and YouTube.
-
Ask questions like "what should you do if you get a message from a stranger", "what should I do if I see something I don't like", "do I know everyone on my friends list" or "what if someone tries to trick me".  It is important to know what to do in these situations.
-
Only use age-appropriate content - there is a reason why there is an age attached.
-
Play online games together.
-
Speak to other parents, children, and adults, and gain knowledge from their experiences online.
